No Eating or Drinking 6 hrs Before Surgery

July 06, 2009 , Posted by MW at Monday, July 06, 2009

Getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow. The appointment is at 9:30am. That means that if I can't eat or drink for 6 hours, I have to wake up at 3am to eat something otherwise I'll be stuck with just dinner 15 hours before.

I wonder why we can't eat or drink for 6 hours. Maybe it's so that we don't relieve ourselves while asleep during surgery.

You know what? I'm going to eat a huge breakfast tomorrow morning and ignore the rule. It might be my last meal so it better be a good one. Plus I'd like to hear what the surgeon has to say when I leave him a present during the operation. I assume it would be along the lines of, "Uh, yeah you pooped yourself."

It's so you don't choke on vomit. When you're under general anesthesia you won't cough to clear your lungs so basically it keeps you alive and stops you getting lung infections. This is a *really* good rule to obey!
